So I applied, hope I make the cut!  My mother is my inspiration to better myself and help others at the same time. Back in November mom was sick, and we had discussed the subject of a doctorate and how to help organizations succeed. She said it was a great idea and she will live to see me graduate!  So when she passed in December, it took the wind out of my sails. I started to doubt myself and put off applying to GW GSEHD Executive Leadership Program.  Mom reached out to me (from the great beyond) and motivated me to apply --so I did.  I thought I would share an excerpt of my Statement of Purpose that was used in my application.  Mom and Me at Christmas (1988) __________________________________________________________________________________ In the 1980’s and 1990’s, my mother was a COBOL software developer. IT is About the People!

On thing I have found in the world, is that people are necessary. People are the root cause in everything we do. They are why we go to work. They are why we come home from work. Heck, we encounter many of them on the way to work --some of them not so nice! In the IT world, they are the doers. However it is important to understand the basic concepts in managing them. What is a technical person? Ask around and you will get answers ranging from, someone who can make their iPod work, works on the helpdesk, performs desktop support, defines IT rules and governance, IT Security personnel, System Administrators and System Engineers/Network Engineers. The list is tremendous. So why am I talking about this? Well how many times has your email gone down or blackberry acted up? Was it the machine or its software that failed? In most cases it the problem can be traced back to a person. The person didn't design the system with your needs in mind, or something as simple as not checking the system...

CIO's in Odd Places!

I was reading this on the CIO Weblog: http://www.cio-weblog.com/50226711/cios_in_odd_places.php "How is this for alignment? Eye care company Bausch & Lomb has named Alan Farnsworth as CIO... and Senior Vice President of Customer Service. I've heard of CFOs doubling as CIOs. A COO doubling up on the role would raise no eyebrows here. But customer service? Mr. Farnsworth, who has been with the company since 1998 and has most recently held the position of president of the company's Europe, Middle East, and Asia division, doesn't appear to have a lick of IT experience in his background. " -- CIO Weblog Well, I.T. involves quite a bit of customer service. Especially in dealing with the support side of the house, this is where a customer service oriented person can fit the bill (just remember IT isn't all about computer technical support).
